The MOByDic 4940 simulates a fully OBD-compliant ECU, making it an ideal benchtop companion for anyone developing, testing, or troubleshooting OBD diagnostic tools and scan tools. Unlike a single-protocol simulator, the 4940 supports five different communication protocols and lets you switch between gasoline and diesel PID sets right from its onboard menu — no reprogramming or external PC required.

With an integrated LCD display and keypad, users can configure the protocol, fuel type, monitoring/readiness status, DTCs, and even the VIN directly on the device, then save the configuration to onboard EEPROM. Eight potentiometers let you adjust live sensor values (RPM, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, and more) in real time, making it easy to validate how a scan tool responds to changing conditions.

How It Works

On power-up, an LED self-test sequence runs, after which the Ready LED lights up. The Connect LED confirms a successful protocol connection, while the MIL LED blinks if no protocol has been selected yet, and the yellow Data LED shows live communication activity with the connected OBD tester. Pressing the DTC button turns on the MIL LED and generates the configured diagnostic trouble codes — checked automatically on every request from the external tester.

Setup is done entirely through the onboard menu and keypad: select the protocol, choose gasoline or diesel, configure monitoring/readiness status across 6 pages, set two DTCs and the VIN, then simply select "Save and Run" to store the configuration in EEPROM and make the simulator ready for connection.

Simulated Parameters (PCM / Powertrain ECU)

Gasoline mode: RPM, engine load, vehicle speed (VSS), fuel level indicator (FLI), engine coolant temperature (ECT), mass air flow (MAF), accelerator pedal position (APP), oxygen sensor voltage (O2V)

Diesel mode: Battery voltage (BAT), manifold absolute pressure (MAP), intake air temperature (IAT), ambient air temperature (AAT), fuel rail pressure (FRP), EGR position and error, barometric pressure (BARO)

Common to both: Runtime since power-on, distance travelled with MIL on, OBD compliance (EOBD), lambda value, MIL-on time, time since DTC clear
